Our 'Promoting and demonstrating ‘Fire Wise’ planning and implementation in the Bass Coast' project is progressing well since out last project update in November 2023.
The project is funded by the Australian Governments Preparing Australian Communities program in partnership with the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (FNPW). FNPW is an environmental charity organisation, that has been assisting communities to restore and conserve Australia’s natural environment for more than 50 years. The Bass Coast Landcare Network, supported by VicForests and Gippsland Agroforestry Network, are hosting this exciting field day on ‘Agroforestry, Harvesting and marketing your product’.
The field day will be visiting the Glen Alvie property of Jon and Margaret Hauser who have been growing and managing timber plantations of their property for 20 years, commencing in 2003. They have recently commenced harvesting and have invested in their own portable mill. Gippsland Threatened Species Action Group and Birdlife Bass Coast are working on a project to conserve Blue-Winged Parrots (BWPs).

In partnership with the Mulloon Institute the Bass Coast Landcare Network presents 'Restoring landscape function on your farm'. Learn how to apply simple strategies to improve productivity and
drought resilience, optimize water cycling and landscape function. Over 2 years, Melbourne Water in partnership with Orchard End Farm has been looking at management practices that can be used to reduce problem pasture pests such as Lucerne Flea & Red Legged Earth Mite. Pasture invertebrate pests can be mis-diagnosed and therefore control measures often don’t solve the problem.
Here at KLG we conducted a member survey in 2023. The feedback from our members was invaluable and included several good ideas. One of these, was to propagate our own plants. Growing our own plants is literally a “value add” to our fundamental Landcare objectives.
