Kongwak Hills Landcare Group is coordinating a community tree planting event in the Kongwak Pioneer Reserve to celebrate National Tree Day, as the Reserve is in need of some love from its community! We’d love for you to join in to get plants in the ground. Dry years have diminished the north/west section such that a critical mass of understory and trees have died back, leaving the forest exposed to further dryness, loss of plants and proliferation of weeds. Replacing the understory, midstory and trees will restore this part of our beautiful reserve to a sustainable landscape and support its plants, animals and birds. KHLG want you to learn about Landcare, love your forest and learn how to give it the care it needs.
This event will be held on Saturday July 29th from 10am-4pm, with lunch provided. Click 'read more' for event details and flyer. A big thank you to our hard working volunteer dung beetle monitors for completing a years’ worth of beetle trapping in Southern Gippsland. Results have confirmed a suspected gap in dung beetle activity over winter, however we found good activity in spring, autumn and especially summer. To protect dung beetle populations it is important to use drenches that have little impact on larvae – eg. Cydectin. Now we know what beetles are active, where and when, we will continue investigating suitable winter active species to introduce in the activity gap. This work has started by trying to breed B. bison and O. vacca, but with mixed results, and we will look at other species. This project was undertaken in partnership with South Gippsland Landcare Network, and funded through the Victorian Landcare Grants and WGCMA. Click below to see the full report.
You are invited to an exciting farm walk at the Glen Alvie property of Dani and Brad Carr.
On the 17th of June, Bass Coast Landcare Network will hold its Hooded Plover Conservation Dinner. Bass Coast Landcare Network is a grass-roots network of staff and volunteers who actively provide solutions to our most pressing environmental challenges. We do this locally, with a small but dedicated team. This year and through this dinner, we are hoping to raise funds to go towards our Hooded Plover conservation program. This program has seen the numbers of ‘vulnerable’ local Hooded Plovers increase steadily and then double in the past year. The program itself, however, is now at risk as critical funds have not been renewed. We hope you will join us for dinner, dancing, and an auction, to help us raise funds to save the Hoodie.

Local residents, Local Shire and Local Landcare linking people, plants and plans for the future.
This is a story of a successful collaboration that began in early 2022 at Woodford Reserve Korumburra. It began with three local residents, Lillian, Tony and Rosemary, new to the area, and not previously known to each other, expressing an interest to Korumburra Landcare Group (KLG) and the South Gippsland Shire Council (SGSC) in setting up a Friend’s group to assist with the upkeep and enhancement of the beautiful reserve on their doorstep. Woodford Reserve is hidden away at the end of Woodford Place, Korumburra. It is planted out with indigenous plants in the headwaters and along the creek’s banks. A large planting day was organised by KLG in collaboration with SGSC. This initiative was sparked by a suggestion to KLG by Lillian from the Friends group and our then President, Melynda Dawson, swung into action. By the end of 2022, well over 2,000 additional plants sourced from KLG and SGSC, have enhanced the area. Streamside species will protect the banks of the creek that are prone to flash flooding and work has continued downstream broadening the corridor of local ground cover, under and mid story plant species.
