On the 17th of June, Bass Coast Landcare Network will hold its Hooded Plover Conservation Dinner. Bass Coast Landcare Network is a grass-roots network of staff and volunteers who actively provide solutions to our most pressing environmental challenges. We do this locally, with a small but dedicated team. This year and through this dinner, we are hoping to raise funds to go towards our Hooded Plover conservation program. This program has seen the numbers of ‘vulnerable’ local Hooded Plovers increase steadily and then double in the past year. The program itself, however, is now at risk as critical funds have not been renewed. We hope you will join us for dinner, dancing, and an auction, to help us raise funds to save the Hoodie.

Local residents, Local Shire and Local Landcare linking people, plants and plans for the future.
This is a story of a successful collaboration that began in early 2022 at Woodford Reserve Korumburra. It began with three local residents, Lillian, Tony and Rosemary, new to the area, and not previously known to each other, expressing an interest to Korumburra Landcare Group (KLG) and the South Gippsland Shire Council (SGSC) in setting up a Friend’s group to assist with the upkeep and enhancement of the beautiful reserve on their doorstep. Woodford Reserve is hidden away at the end of Woodford Place, Korumburra. It is planted out with indigenous plants in the headwaters and along the creek’s banks. A large planting day was organised by KLG in collaboration with SGSC. This initiative was sparked by a suggestion to KLG by Lillian from the Friends group and our then President, Melynda Dawson, swung into action. By the end of 2022, well over 2,000 additional plants sourced from KLG and SGSC, have enhanced the area. Streamside species will protect the banks of the creek that are prone to flash flooding and work has continued downstream broadening the corridor of local ground cover, under and mid story plant species. To RSVP, please email joel.geoghegan@basscoastlandcare.org.au The Coronet Ratepayers and Residents Association received a Grant from the Bass Coast Shire Council for the Naming and Smoking Ceremony for their newly named small lake - Wang toolome parnung. (Duck Waterhole)
This small lake is situated north of Norsemens road along the coast track between Coronet Bay and Corinella. The lake is a combination of a historic freshwater spring and an area that now additionally filters storm water runoff. This occurs by the filtering of the water through the native reeds before settling in the lake and then flowing into Western Port Bay. The CRRA are grateful to the Bunurong Elders from the Bunurong Land Council for their consideration and naming of the previously unnamed small lake. This body of water is managed by Melbourne Water, and the CRRA appreciate work done by Melbourne Water to support and officially gazette the name. The Grant will enable the group to raise awareness of this newly named lake and the fauna and flora that surrounds it. The “Naming Day” Sunday March 12, will be a Community gathering day to celebrate this special area. Indigenous plantings will occur along with highlighting and learning about the fauna and flora of the area. The “Vulnerable to extinction” species - the Swamp Antechinus, lives at the edge of Wang toolome parnung alongside many other native species including the Eastern Long Neck Turtle. A variety of native birds including roosting and migratory birds visit and live in the area. A walk with a Birdlife Bass representative in 2021 highlighted 44 species of birds along 500 metres of the coast track beside Wang toolome parnung. It is truly a special place. We look forward to seeing you at the Naming Ceremony on site at the beach end of Norsemens road, Coronet Bay Sunday March 12th at 11am. Food and coffee trucks will be there for refreshments. |
