Controlling Rabbits

Rabbits are a major pest across almost all Australia, including the Bass Coast Region. They cause a number of problems to both the land and the animals, such as the natives and livestock, that inhabit it. On your property, that can include problems such as erosion, grazing of both pastures and native plant species, and competing with livestock for feed.

There are several different control methods for rabbits, and depending on the time of year, some will be more appropriate than others. Options include baiting, warren destruction and fumigation, shooting, trapping, and biological control methods. Bass Coast Landcare Network and their Pest Plant and Animal Team are able to tackle rabbits on your property using a combination of these methods. We have also developed some material for free download with lots of information about rabbits and how to control them. Some options may surprise you and are relatively easily to complete yourself, such as removal of rabbit harbour on your property.

Rabbits are unique in that they can affect both urban and rural properties. Some control methods, such as baiting, are not able to be done on properties smaller than 1000m2. If you have a problem with rabbits on your property, contact Bass Coast Landcare Network’s Rabbit Project Officer on 0456 390 423 or via email at jason.mccracken@basscoastlandcare.org.au to discuss options available to you.
