The Bass Coast Landcare Networks' Sustainable Agriculture program is new and evolving. As community expectations around agriculture and food production evolve the Bass Coast Landcare Networks Sustainable Agriculture Program is ideally placed to work with the community to develop and implement trials encouraging diversification and innovation in agriculture.
Education and peer to peer discussion group programs are also used as tools to expose landowners to new and innovative sustainable practices. Developing partnerships with educational institutions and industry groups is essential to ensure our Sustainable Agriculture Program is based on credible science. |
Growing Southern Gippsland Project
The Bass Coast Landcare Network is pleased to announce receipt of funding through the Victorian State Governments’ Climate Change Innovation Grants program. These grants are managed through the Virtual Centre for Climate Change Innovation and we have been awarded $254,236 over two years.
Commencing in June 2018, the Bass Coast Landcare Network started working with key partners RMIT, Federation University, Bass Coast Shire Council, South Gippsland Landcare Network and the agricultural community of Southern Gippsland, to respond to climate change.
The project is developing 12 key landscape agricultural property case studies providing detailed guidance on the landscapes capacity and capability to innovate and diversify as a response to climate change. These case studies will be further supported by a series of field days and other events designed to inform and guide the broader agricultural community through decisions around climate change.
The project will culminate in the development of a web-based decision-making portal allowing farmers and industry support organisations to make informed decisions about their response to climate change and sustainability.
This is an extremely exciting project for Bass Coast and Southern Gippsland. The Bass Coast Landcare Network is privileged to work with project partners RMIT, Federation University and the Bass Coast Shire Council. Chair of Bass Coast Landcare Network, Ric Oldman says, “We congratulate our team and Partners on their successful project funding submission to lead such a significant opportunity to directly work with local farmers responding to climate change challenges.
As we need a viable agricultural sector with enhanced farmer capacity to achieve sustainable productivity growth, this project represents an important opportunity for our agricultural communities within our local area to team up with the science to lead a practical response to climate change through innovation and diversification.
Working with RMIT and Federation University will ensure the project is underpinned with science-based expertise. We look forward to commencing this project and developing it as a flagship for similar projects into the future”.
