Why volunteer?Volunteering with Bass Coast Landcare Network has many benefits for the volunteer, the Network and of course the environment.
The act of volunteering has been proven to have a positive effect on physical and mental well-being, with volunteers having increased confidence, social engagement, and a sense of purpose. Many hands make light work, and when the work is lighter, we can achieve more! Read below to see what volunteering opportunities are available. |
Tree Planting
Planting Indigenous trees and shrubs is a key part of what we do at Landcare, and we love to have volunteers of all ages and abilities working alongside us, to make the Bass Coast area a diverse, healthy landscape which provides shelter and food for native animals, as well as improving water quality and preventing land degradation.
Bass Coast Landcare Network holds many tree planting days every year throughout late Autumn to early Spring, planting an average of 180,000 plants, thanks to the enormous help from volunteers, school groups, and various small organisations and businesses.
Most plantings run from 10am-1pm and finish with a delicious BBQ lunch with great company.
If you would like to get involved with one of our plantings from around June until September each year, please see the current planting schedule on our news and events page by clicking here.

Nursery Group
The nursery relies heavily on dedicated volunteers, who do great work collecting seed, propagating, and caring for our native plants, so that by late Autumn-Winter each year we have a nice supply of around 30,000 plants for revegetation projects. In keeping with the social side of the group, visits to other nurseries or places of interest, such as French Island, are organised during the quieter months. The nursery currently has two greenhouses, two hardening off areas, a wetland pond and a potting up area.
The nursery group meets every Friday from 9.30am-12.30pm in Bass, at the Bass Recreation Reserve. Volunteering in the Nursery offers the opportunity to learn and perform a number of tasks, including seed collection, propagation, planting multiple different species, caring for the plants and noting any problems, and then preparing them for planting days.
It is a very rewarding process to complete from start to finish, watching the nursery go from trays of soil to an abundance of beautiful native plants. Other benefits include meeting new people, learning all you want to know about a wide range of native plants, and a great sense of accomplishment when the 30,000 plants are spread across the Bass Coast Shire providing shelter and food for our native animals, windbreaks for stock and aesthetic value to the landscape.
If joining the nursery group sounds like something you would be interested in doing, contact Robbie Gray at [email protected]

River Garden
The Bass Coast Landcare Network River Garden is located in the paddock on the Bass Highway between the BCLN office and the Bass River. The River Garden is a trials site for horticultural innovations that can be applied across the region from a household to commercial scale, that also incorporates a community garden and education facilities. The garden has been conceived as a co-creation with the local community and we would like to invite interested community members to participate.
A volunteer program on site will be starting in 2020, where volunteers will be welcome to join in activities such as planting, weeding, harvesting, and general maintenance. Watch this space!!
