Have you seen a Blue-Winged Parrot?

Gippsland Threatened Species Action Group and Birdlife Bass Coast are working on a project to conserve Blue-Winged Parrots (BWPs). ​

They are an elusive little bird, closely related to the famous Orange-bellied Parrots (OBPs). They are often sighted in coastal grasslands, saltmarsh, wetlands, dead trees, paddocks and other open grassy areas.

BirdLife Bass Coast chose to research BWPs as:

• not much is known about them recently
• their conservation status has been downgraded to “Vulnerable” in March 2023
• we want to avoid a repeat of the OBP crisis.

BWPs have been regularly sighted in the Bass Coast area, and we believe that the mainland population also nests here, but there are currently few recent breeding records.

We need your help to find out more!

We need to collect as many observations as possible so that we can understand what is happening to them, where they are feeding, what are they feeding on and when and where they are nesting (September – February).
We’d love to hear from you if you:

• have seen BWPs on or near your property, and would like to host a nest box
• see one or more BWPs, please either record them in Birdata or use our BWP survey form and/or contact us by email: [email protected] and [email protected]
• you have taken photos of BWPs that you are willing to share.
