Here at KLG we conducted a member survey in 2023. The feedback from our members was invaluable and included several good ideas. One of these, was to propagate our own plants. Growing our own plants is literally a “value add” to our fundamental Landcare objectives. It also offers our members the opportunity to actively involve themselves in Landcaring activities throughout the year with a commitment of time as their lifestyle allows. It is an especially busy time for plant nursery work during spring and summer months, when our traditional Landcare activities are completed. So, in the spring of 2023, our KLG “Growers Group” began a pilot project.
As a result, 10,000 plus seedlings across a range of 22 species have been propagated and are being nursed and nurtured for this 2024 planting season. Korumburra Landcare Group collaboration with the South Gippsland Shire Council has been planning a planting project along the Great Southern Rail Trail that will begin with Stage 1 this year. Our Growers Group will supply all the plants for this project, as well as making further disbursements to our other local community “Friends Groups” who are actively caring for our environment in and around Korumburra. There is an opportunity being explored to establish our Growers Group Plant Nursery activities in Korumburra……watch this space for more good news.
