In 2022, a partnership project between Bass Coast Landcare Network, South Gippsland Landcare Network, Trust for Nature, INVERT-ECO, Drift Media and the Gippsland Threatened Species Action Group was funded by the Australian Government. The project was titled “Enhanced Knowledge and Protection of the Giant Gippsland Earthworm”. The majority of Giant Gippsland Earthworm (GGE) habitat in the Strzelecki Ranges has been cleared for agriculture. GGE can survive well under pasture but need protection from threats such as changes in the soil moisture, soil compaction and pugging by cattle. Revegetation of dense, high water-usage species can also dry out GGE habitat.
With the project successfully completed, we are excited to make available some fantastic new resources designed to provide innovative advice on how to manage sensitive GGE colonies throughout our agricultural landscape. Click on the link below to find a GGE habitat identification tool and also a protecting GGE habitat guidelines document which is also available for users to download. https://www.giantearthworm.org.au/gge-habitat-landform.htm Also, the link below will take you on a journey through a Giant Gippsland Earthworm multimedia interactive resource where you will discover information on the Giant Gippsland Earthworm and the project. This interactive includes information videos, funs facts, downloadable resources and link to other websites for your information. https://driftmedia.com.au/gge360/index.htm We hope you enjoy these resources and learn more about our special Giant Gippsland Earthworm. The ‘Enhanced Knowledge and Protection of the Giant Gippsland Earthworm’ project received grant funding from the Australian Government. |
