The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action is partnering with Birdlife Australia to undertake the surveying of White-bellied Sea-Eagles in and around the Gippsland Lakes. While the project focuses on surveying in and around the Gippsland Lakes, surveying further along the coastline and inland waters of Gippsland will also occur during this period. What’s involved? Surveying of White-bellied Sea-Eagles takes place in late spring and conclude mid-summer. Surveying during this period allows breeding pairs and nests currently being used to be identified, in addition to determining the number of young in the nest. White-bellied Sea-Eagles are sensitive to disturbance by humans, so it is important that survey techniques consider this and are low impact. Access to nest sites will generally be by bushwalking into the site or by boat on waterways, and nests will be observed from a distance where possible. Previously used nest sites will be re-surveyed as a priority and potential new nest sites will be identified through recent reoccurring sightings of White-bellied Sea Eagles.
